The bird is actually a pigeon found dead in the street and photographed by a friend. I used it as reference because of it's unnatural pose, which on canvas appears to be strangely dive-bombing. This made me think of ideas like 'kamikaze', 'crash and burn', 'down in flames'... So I added flames to the wings and suddenly it became an archetype of the mythical Icarus, who fashioned wings to fly high but got too close to the sun, burned, and fell back to Earth. This "fall from grace" seems amplified by the bird's death and unnatural contortion.
